In 2018, several members of the National CLC steering committee came together and created the AGC Construction Innovation Awards, proudly sponsored by Autodesk. The award was created in conjunction with AGC’s Centennial Celebration. As we celebrated and recognized the past during AGC’s Centennial Celebration it continues to be important to look to the future to address ongoing issues affecting the industry. In this spirit, AGC decided to continue to host the Innovation Awards as an annual award incentivize and encourage free thinkers (especially emerging leaders) to provide pioneering solutions to industry challenges. Innovation Award winners will be announced at the AGC’s Annual Convention opening ceremony, March 29, 2021.

Wade Misch is a Senior Civil Engineering major at Valparaiso University and recipient of the CLC scholarship through the AGC Education and Research Foundation.
His dad owns a construction company named Misch and Associates, so he grew up around construction. He started going to construction sites with his dad and five brothers at a very young age. Wade assisted in keeping the job site safe by cleaning up scrap materials and putting away cords and tools. When he was twelve, he started doing paint jobs such as staining log homes and painting walls. Throughout the next few years, he watched his dad and brothers talk with many different contractors which taught him communication skills and problem-solving techniques. Once he was able to prove he was learning, his dad slowly gave him projects of his own to manage.
When Wade was 16, his dad made him almost fully in charge of an $80,000 job to seal and paint a 40,000 square foot warehouse roof. He oversaw almost all aspects of the project with my dad helping to guide him when needed. Wade provided a paint crew, talk to the CEO of the warehouse, collect checks, order materials, and created a schedule. His crew finished the job two weeks ahead of schedule. The experience of leading a project helped him realize what it takes to be a good leader and run a job effectively.
Wade is currently the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe Competition captain at Valparaiso University and a member of ASCE. Upon graduation, Wade plans to earn his master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
